Red Dragon by Thomas Harris

Synopsis:

Feed your fears with the terrifying classic that introduced cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter.

To find him, Graham has to understand him. To understand him, Graham has only one place left to go: the mind of Dr. Lecter.

Review:

“Red Dragon” is a masterpiece among psychological thrillers. Thomas Harris introduces us to Will Graham, an FBI profiler with a talent for getting inside the minds of serial killers.

Were it not for Graham’s character, would the TV series Criminal Minds exist today? A fair question to ask. Such is the power of “Red Dragon”, which influenced crime thriller books, movies, and televisions series for decades to come.

As Graham pursues “The Tooth Fairy”, one wonders who is stalking whom. “Red Dragon” is a classic that deserves mention with the best thriller novels ever written.

Silence of the Lambs: Hannibal Lecter Book 2

silence-of-the-lambs

Synopsis:

A serial murderer known only by a grotesquely apt nickname—Buffalo Bill—is stalking particular women. He has a purpose, but no one can fathom it, for the bodies are discovered in different states. Clarice Starling, a young trainee at the F.B.I. Academy, is surprised to be summoned by Jack Crawford, Chief of the Bureau’s Behavioral Science section. Her assignment: to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a brilliant psychiatrist and grisly killer now kept under close watch in the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Lecter’s insight into the minds of murderers could help track and capture Buffalo Bill.

Smart and attractive, Starling is shaken to find herself in a strange, intense relationship with the acutely perceptive Lecter. His cryptic clues—about Buffalo Bill and about her—launch Clarice on a search that every reader will find startling, harrowing, and totally compelling.

Review:

“Silence of the Lambs” stands among the all-time best thriller and horror novels. As if Harris needed any help, he showed growth between books 1 and 2. The prose is richer, more atmospheric, and Clarice Starling’s arc is a masterclass in storytelling and character development.

Harris turns up the volume with more detailed criminal investigation procedures and a horrifying serial killer. The story’s themes examine morality, evil, and manipulation, all while producing a classic thriller that is unsettlingly believable.

Hannibal: Hannibal Lecter Book 3

Hannibal by Thomas Harris

Synopsis:

You remember Hannibal Lecter: gentleman, genius, cannibal. Seven years have passed since Dr. Lecter escaped from custody. And for seven years he’s been at large, free to savor the scents, the essences, of an unguarded world.

But intruders have entered Dr. Lecter’s world, piercing his new identity, sensing the evil that surrounds him. For the multimillionaire Hannibal left maimed, for a corrupt Italian policeman, and for FBI agent Clarice Starling, who once stood before Lecter and who has never been the same, the final hunt for Hannibal Lecter has begun. All of them, in their separate ways, want to find Dr. Lecter. And all three will get their wish. But only one will live long enough to savor the reward. . . .

Review:

Thomas gravitates away from the police procedural structure and moves toward a more baroque and Gothic style.

“Hannibal” straddles the line between horror and thriller and features a slower-paced narrative that emphasizes psychological terror. Though this novel is infamous for its graphic violence, the character studies of Lecter and the faltering Clarice Starling make “Hannibal” a worthy sequel to “Silence of the Lambs.”

Hannibal Rising: Hannibal Lecter Book 4

Hannibal Rising by Thomas Harris

Synopsis:

He is one of the most haunting characters in all of literature. At last the evolution of his evil is revealed.

Hannibal Lecter emerges from the nightmare of the Eastern Front, a boy in the snow, mute, with a chain around his neck.

He seems utterly alone, but he has brought his demons with him.

Hannibal’s uncle, a noted painter, finds him in a Soviet orphanage and brings him to France, where Hannibal will live with his uncle and his uncle’s beautiful and exotic wife, Lady Murasaki.

Lady Murasaki helps Hannibal to heal. With her help he flourishes, becoming the youngest person ever admitted to medical school in France.

But Hannibal’s demons visit him and torment him. When he is old enough, he visits them in turn.

He discovers he has gifts beyond the academic, and in that epiphany, Hannibal Lecter becomes death’s prodigy.

Review:

Though this is the fourth and (apparently) final book in the series, “Hannibal Rising” serves as a prequel to the first three novels, following a young Hannibal from his youth, to World War II, to cannibalistic serial killer.

Events shape who Hannibal becomes, and these play out in disturbing prose. Harris focuses on psychological character development in this novel, and the results do not disappoint.

While “Hannibal Rising” lacks the suspense and police procedural elements of previous books, the story humanizes Lecter, ironically making the first three books even more terrifying.
